That’s great! Here at Castle Sefton Press, we too love second-hand books. And we are very aware of the need to reduce consumption of physical resources and make the best use of every book printed. Also, the sale of second-hand books supports a wide range of charities.
That’s why we have created our Eco Publishing Scheme. You can now enjoy a second-hand Castle Sefton Press book and still support us by making a small donation.
So much goes in to the creation of a new book. Without new books, there would be no second-hand ones to enjoy.
First the author works for months, or even years, giving of their unique experience, inspiration and talent. Then there is detailed editing and revision before final proofreading. Skilled professionals are contracted to work alongside the author and publisher for this.
Then comes typesetting and formatting. An original artistic design is created for the cover. In our case, this will involve the creation of artwork using physical media that is added to the digital cover layout. Back matter for the cover, usually a blurb and review quotations, must be written and proofread too.
The interior and exterior files are then formatted and sent to the printers. (We use more than one, as explained in How to Buy Castle Sefton Press Books.) Details of the book are uploaded to our website, to the distributors, to Nielsen Book Data, the British Library, and Bibliographic Data Services.
Then comes marketing and publicity. Helping readers to find our books among so many available is time-consuming and can be expensive. We have to maintain our website and social media channels. And for every book purchased, we pay for the printing costs. If you didn’t buy it from us, we pay distribution costs too.
Why we need our Eco Publishing Scheme.
The sustainability and environmental effects of our business are important to us. (You can read more about our ecological policies and practice in our articles.) We all need to look after the planet that is our home.
New stories and uplifting and inspiring creative work are also very important. They contribute to our health and well-being, our quality of life and our understanding. They can even affect our future.
We are a tiny business with just a handful of people to perform all the functions vital to bringing our books to you, the reader. If you have enjoyed one of our books second-hand, sadly you have made no contribution to the costs of that process at all.
