I was surprised how good the gardens look in winter. The low sun and deep shadows show the mansion at its best and the absence of distracting flowers – much as I love them – accentuates the garden’s architectural qualities. I created the picture with artists’ soft pastels. The immediacy of the medium helps to bring a feeling of cool, freshness to the scene.
